Jubilate !
Over 100 voices with a Baroque Orchestra will bring your spirit to life this spring!
Our spring concert was chosen to be celebratory in spirit and to return the choir to music from the Baroque, a style long enjoyed by the Choral Society. We’ve chosen to sing slightly lesser-known works by two beloved composers of the period. Händel, perhaps most famous for the oratorio Messiah written later in his career, wrote his “Utrecht” Te Deum and Jubilate under royal commission in London as a very young composer. Using the orchestra and soloists (from the choir) to full effect, these works sparkle and snap with energy and confidence. Both pieces will be performed in their original, English-language versions.
From a generation prior to Händel, French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier sets the same Te Deum text but now in Latin. Long-time audience members may remember the Choral Society singing Charpentier’s Messe de minuit pour Noël (Midnight mass for Christmas) several years ago under prior director Alex Favazza. The French style is unique and offers an exciting counterpoint to the works in the first half of our program, culminating in a rousing finish.

Spring 2022 Mozart Requiem
Since 1957, the Rockingham Choral Society has expanded and enhanced cultural experiences by performing choral masterpieces and adhering to the highest musical standards. The Choral Society is comprised of almost 100 members and presents two concerts annually to the audiences in the New Hampshire Seacoast region.
The Rockingham Choral Society is proud to announce the creation of the Dr. Henry Wing Memorial Music Scholarship. Beginning this year, the Rockingham Choral Society will offer a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating Rockingham County high school senior that is planning to major in music in their post-secondary education. The scholarship is named in honor of former music director Dr. Henry Wing, who served the organization for 30 years.
In the fall of 1978, then Associate Professor of Music at UNH, Dr. Wing became director and the Rockingham Choral Society continued to flourish under his baton until his retirement in the spring of 2008. Among his many achievements, he instituted a policy of choosing the vocal soloists from the membership and hiring the best orchestral players from New Hampshire and Maine, including faculty and students from the UNH Music Department.
“The traditions Dr. Wing instituted during his tenure have given the local area singers a chance to perform in the spotlight and audiences the opportunity to hear many great choral masterpieces in their original form,” said Kristofer Johnson, the group’s current Music Director.
Dr. Wing’s experience with choral groups also included positions as Choral Director at Colby Junior College, Elmira College, and the University of New Hampshire, choral workshops at Tanglewood, and work with both students and adult choruses throughout the New England area. Dr. Wing was an Associate Professor Emeritus of the University of New Hampshire Music Department and also taught voice privately in Dover, New Hampshire.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 1, 2024. Interested students in Rockingham County should contact their high school administrator for details or they may write directly to the Rockingham Choral Society at info@rockinghamchoral.org for application instructions.
